Kink dictionary / CNC (consensual non-consent)
What is CNC?

CNC — consensual non-consent — is pre-negotiated roleplay in which partners act out a scenario of resistance or reluctance that both have explicitly agreed to in advance.
The name is deliberately paradoxical: the consent is real and comes first; the 'non-consent' is fiction performed inside it. Without the prior negotiation, what's described here simply isn't CNC — it's assault. That line is absolute.
Why people enjoy it
Fantasies of being overwhelmed or 'given no choice' are among the most commonly reported adult fantasies in sexuality research — largely because they deliver surrender without responsibility: the fantasy removes the burden of choosing while (in reality) the person has chosen everything in advance.
For the partner in the pursuing role, the appeal is usually the theatre of intensity plus the profound trust being extended — not the fiction taken at face value.
Safety & consent
- CNC is advanced practice. It requires: explicit scenario negotiation beforehand (what happens, what's excluded), a safeword or safe-signal that overrides the fiction instantly — since 'no' and 'stop' may be part of the script, something unambiguous like 'red' or a dropped object, established trust (this is not first-date material), and planned aftercare, because the emotional echo can be loud even when everything went exactly as agreed.
- Sobriety during negotiation and scene is strongly advised; you can't fine-tune a consent framework you can't fully track.
- Revisit consent between scenes. A yes last month is not a standing subscription.
Common misconceptions
- “Enjoying this fantasy means someone wants the real thing.”
- Decades of research on sexual fantasy say clearly: no. The defining feature of the fantasy is that the person controls every variable — the exact opposite of real assault, whose defining feature is that they control none.
- “A safeword makes anything CNC.”
- A safeword is necessary but nowhere near sufficient. CNC is defined by the negotiation that happens before anything begins — scope, script, signals, aftercare. The safeword is the emergency brake, not the vehicle.
